Matthew Wells

RIBA CEng FIStructE, FICE – Director at Techniker, Author and  Professor of Civil and Structural Engineering

Educated at Leeds University under Tim Megson, John Ergotoudis and John Surtees then Nottingham School of Architecture, Matthew Wells started out at the integrated practice Arup Associates.  He learnt his engineering at Alan Baxter Associates and an approach to design working for Tony Hunt, Whitby Bird and Tim McFarlane.  Techniker Ltd. started in 1993 and as consultancy has remained resolutely generalist with particular contributions in glass engineering, timber design (stressed skins and cross laminated lumber), prestressed steel structures, reinforced concrete, high performance fibre reinforced concrete, masonry.  It’s methodology that we are most interested in.  Getting it right, getting it appropriate.

Teaching has always been part of the output and writing is treated as a resistance to declining critical standards. The central area of interest remains the development of the interface between structural design and architect.  This responsibility cannot be abdicated to the free market.

The revolution in design tools is seen not as – well – not revolutionary but just further prosthetics among a whole range of engineering design approaches now available to young and serious designers.
